Cheng-Liang (Charly) Chang, M.Sc.

Biography

Charly is a PhD student in the Department of Health, Sport, and Human Physiology at the University of Iowa, working under the supervision of Dr. JJ Chih-Chia Chen. Prior to joining the University of Iowa, he received his BS from the China Medical University Department of Physical Therapy and his MS from the Department of Physical Education, Health, and Leisure at National Cheng Kung University. 

His research experience includes longitudinal exercise intervention studies in Parkinson’s disease (PD) evaluating the effects of different exercise modalities on motor and neurocognitive outcomes using EEG. His PD research also includes a systematic review and meta-analysis synthesizing evidence on exercise-induced cognitive outcomes. In addition, he has conducted studies examining visuospatial attention in competitive badminton players and effects of kinesiology taping on proprioception and EEG signals in athletes with chronic ankle instability. These research projects have been published in SCI-indexed journals.

Beyond academic work, Charly has a strong background in badminton and has competed at the national collegiate level. With his athletic and clinical training, he engaged in the promotion of adapted physical activity and inclusive sport. He serves as a Paralympic badminton classifier and has experience working as a physical therapist for a national Special Olympics team, supporting athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities in training and competition settings. Beyond his professional activities, he enjoys traveling and participating in a wide range of sports.
